Captain America: Civil War Rewatch!
CA Rewatch Page Wow, I really didn't think my first version of "media analysis" on this blog was going to be about, but it could be worse. I could give up.
- I have again maybe wildly overestimated how frequently Bucky Barnes is actually in these movies.
- Heyyy the subtitles tell me Bucky Barnes is speaking Romaniain. I guess it does make sense to have him speak a close-enough-sounding language that the actor can actually speak.
- So his first scene shows him buying food, actively engaging with the vendor, and even making a point to look at her when he thanks her. He is used to being in the world a little bit, and when he's not on a mission, he feels his identity is secure enough he doesn't have to worry about being recognized. He also has heightened senses(?) so he can sense when he has been made, which brings him to the realization that he actually has been identified publicly now.
- I'm feeling nerdy, so I'm going to keep analyzing.
- T'Challah's relationship with Bucky is antagonistic/offensive because Bucky just killed his dad and Steve's relationship with Bucky is protective/defensive because of his lifelong friendship.
- Also I guess because Steve lost Peggy so Bucky's literally his last chance?
- "Do you fear that, if you open your mouth, the horrors might never stop?" good heavens, no wonder this is popular among angsty teens.
- Bucky's first dialogue after the big fight is to show concern over the people he just beat up.
- Also, when they show the coup, Bucky locks his target up in one of their jail cells, he doesn't kill him even though he probably could. Bucky is serious about wanting to walk away from that life.
- Bucky also feels guilt and shame and unworthiness.
- The flashback story Steve and Bucky tell shows their friendship by how they fill in the blacks for each other's memory gaps as well as just tells the story of them having a bonding experience where Bucky still found a way to factor in doing something for a girl. They were painting Bucky to be a ladies man.
- Bucky is protective and untrusting (fair enough, Iron Man's been the one leading or at least involved in the hunt for Bucky) and won't let his gun down until Steve says it's okay, further "showing" their bond
- I don't know if I actually like the Avengers movie that much, but I'm willing to finish this rewatch for the sake of the project.
